Electrode Placement Guide

Electrode Care Guide

Proper care of your TENS unit electrodes is crucial to ensure effective treatment, longevity, and safety. Follow these guidelines to maintain your electrodes:

1. Preparation Before Use

  • Clean Skin: Always clean the skin area where you will place the electrodes. Use mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly. This helps to remove oils and dirt, ensuring better adhesion and effectiveness.
  • Avoid Lotions and Oils: Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams to the skin before applying electrodes, as they can interfere with adhesion and conductivity.

2. Application

  • Check Electrode Condition: Inspect electrodes for any signs of wear or damage before each use. If the gel is worn out or the electrode is damaged, replace it.
  • Placement: Apply the electrodes to the recommended areas. Ensure good contact with the skin. Avoid placing electrodes over open wounds, broken skin, or infected areas.
  • Proper Attachment: Attach the lead wires to the electrodes securely. Ensure they are connected properly to avoid inconsistent electrical signals.

3. During Use

  • Adhesion: Ensure electrodes remain securely attached during use. If they start to peel off, stop the session and reapply or replace them.
  • Monitor Skin: Periodically check the skin under the electrodes. If you notice redness, irritation, or discomfort, stop using the device and consult a healthcare professional.

4. After Use

  • Removal: Carefully peel the electrodes off the skin. Do not pull on the wires. Lift the edge of the electrode and gently peel it away from the skin.
  • Cleaning: After removing, lightly clean the gel surface of the electrode with a damp cloth to remove any skin oils and residue. Do not use soap, alcohol, or other cleaning agents.
  • Storage: Place the electrodes back on their protective backing or a clean plastic sheet. Store them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator.

5. Maintenance

  • Hydration: If the gel on the electrode starts to dry out, you can extend its life by applying a few drops of water to the gel surface before use.
  • Regular Replacement: Even with good care, electrodes will wear out over time. Replace them as recommended by the manufacturer or when they lose their adhesiveness or conductivity.

6. General Tips

  • Lead Wires: Handle lead wires with care. Avoid pulling on them, and store them in a manner that prevents kinks or damage.
  • Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always refer to the specific care instructions provided by the electrode manufacturer. Different brands may have slightly different care guidelines.

By following these care guidelines, you can ensure that your electrodes remain effective and safe for use, providing you with the best possible therapeutic outcomes.
